• History :
On the plateau of Lussac St-Emilion, held sacred by the Gallic druids, Lucius planted the first vines at the time of the Romans, and gave his name to the town.
The vineyard conquered the English Court as from the 13th century thanks to Benedictine monks.
Château Lucas is the property of the same family since the Pere Prieur (Praying Father) of the Abbey of Faize, in recognition of loyal services, gave the property to an ancestor of the VAUTHIER family at the end of the sixteenth century.
Château Lucas owes its name to the aforementioned place Lucas thus named during the English presence in the region, between the 12th and the 15th century, following the marriage (in 1152) of Eleanor of Aquitaine and Henry Plantagenet, king of England as from 1154.
This house dating back to the sixteenth century would have received Henri IV on the evening of the battle of Coutras.
Today, the youngest of the family, Frédéric VAUTHIER is in charge of Château Lucas, property that covers just over 52 hectares and with the average age of the vines at 35 years.
Although the vineyard of Château Lucas was born in the Gallo-Roman era, it nevertheless uses modern winemaking and cultivation techniques (micro bubbling, temperature control…). Its owner, Frederick VAUTHIER, applies the technique of reasoned treatments, before moving to the integrated agriculture production, and ultimately, produces according to the specifications of organic farming.
Our vineyard produces 3 vintages in AOC Lussac Saint-Emilion :
All our wines are produced with the same assemblies: 50% merlot / 50% cabernet franc
-Château Lucas: about 12 hectares, representing 80,000 bottles. Since 2000, 20% of this wine is aged in barrels. The grape gathering is done partly manually.
-Grand de Lucas: represents 6 hectares of the property. Manual grape gathering, severe sorting and aging in barrels allow the producing of a wine rich in aromas and colors.
-Spirit of Lucas: An exceptional wine, produced only in great vintages, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2005 (different assembly for 1998: 100% merlot). This wine, made from old vines passes 18 to 24 months in new barrels.
The fruity, floral and tannic aromas, make the wines of Château Lucas wines appreciated with red or white meats depending on the temperature of service. Some soft cheeses (St nectaire), mottled crusts (brie, camembert, pont l’évêque), as well as goat cheeses are honored in its presence.
